Rays of Hope project bringing cancer care to all

Life-saving treatment such as radiotherapy for people who develop cancer cannot reach all of those in need due to lack of facilities and trained personnel. Through the Rays of Hope initiative, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is intensifying its activities to help countries bring access to cancer care where it is needed most and save lives.

Improving harvests to feed a growing population in Bangladesh

The agricultural output of Bangladesh is heavily affected by harsh environmental events such as floods, cyclones and storms, increasing the risk of food insecurity. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has collaborated with Bangladesh to use nuclear plant breeding techniques to develop 85 new crop varieties that can survive harsher climates.

Using nuclear science to conserve water and improve harvests in Namibia

Namibia is one of the driest countries in Africa but through better soil and water management, farmers working with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have increased their crop yields by up to 70 per cent for crops like maize, tomatoes and peppers.

Botswana opens its first public radiotherapy centre, with IAEA support

The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) helped to establish the first radiotherapy centre in Botswana in 2023. Its Rays of Hope initiative aims to close the gap in low- and middle-income countries by improving the availability of radiotherapy services, medical imaging and nuclear medicine. By working towards cancer care for all the IAEA is helping to bring good health and well-being to more people.

How climate-smart agriculture is enabling African farmers to reap record-high cassava yields using nuclear science & technology

Cassava, a starchy root vegetable, is an important nutritional staple consumed daily by nearly half a billion people in Africa. Using climate-smart agricultural and nuclear techniques, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) based in Vienna, along with the Food and Agricultural Organization is paving the way towards #ZeroHunger by enhancing cassava yields and strengthening food security for many people in Africa.

Nuclear power is a low-carbon source of energy, because unlike coal, oil or gas power plants, nuclear power plants do not produce carbon dioxide during their operation. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provides technical expertise and guidance to countries that want to develop a nuclear power programme.
